About this journey

Poprad-Tatry station sits at the foot of the High Tatras, serving as the gateway to that mountain range and as the departure point for Line 180, which forms part of Pan-European Corridor Va — a rail corridor stretching from Venice to Kyiv via Bratislava, Žilina, and Košice. The station itself was opened on 8 December 1871 together with the Žilina–Poprad section of the Košice–Bohumín Railway, and underwent a major modernisation costing SKK 858 million in 2006–2007. A separate metre gauge connection to the High Tatras via Starý Smokovec was added on 20 December 1908, and those narrow-gauge platforms remain part of the station today.

From Poprad-Tatry, Line 180 runs west through the foothills and river valleys of northern Slovakia to reach Žilina, whose station opened on 8 January 1871 upon the inauguration of the Český Těšín–Žilina section of the same Košice–Bohumín Railway. Žilina station functions as one of Slovakia's principal rail junctions, linking the Bratislava–Žilina and Košice–Žilina railways at the heart of the country's main east–west corridor. The journey moves from a mountain-facing resort gateway through the Slovak interior to a major interchange — two nodes on the same nineteenth-century main line, connected across roughly one hour and forty-five minutes of cab-ride footage.
