About this journey

Portbou station sits at Spain's northeastern rail frontier, where the Barcelona–Cerbère railway meets the international boundary. Because trains crossing into France must shift between Iberian gauge at 1,668 mm and standard gauge at 1,435 mm, Portbou functions as a compulsory interchange point: through the Balitres tunnel, both gauges run side by side toward the French station of Cerbère, while services heading south continue on Iberian-gauge track. The station is owned by Adif and serves Rodalies de Catalunya regional line R11 alongside Girona commuter rail line RG1, with French TER Occitanie trains also calling here.

From Portbou, the Renfe Class 447 works south along the Barcelona–Cerbère railway toward the Catalan capital. The journey ends at Barcelona Sants, a station rebuilt in the 1970s in a modern airport style, with all of its platforms sited underground. The arrival of AVE high-speed services on 20 February 2008 reshaped the station further: platforms 1 to 6 were converted to standard gauge for those workings, while the remaining 8 retain the broader Iberian gauge used by regional and commuter services. The high-speed network was later extended across the border in January 2013 via the Perpignan–Barcelona high-speed rail line. In that sense, the cab ride traces the older Iberian-gauge corridor that predates, and still runs parallel to, the high-speed infrastructure now connecting Spain and France.
