Tarragona station, opened in 1856, sits on the Valencia–Sant Vicenç de Calders railway managed by Adif — a line built for the broad-gauge Iberian network that still carries regional and medium-distance services along this stretch of the Mediterranean coast. The station's designation as a 'provisional station' reflects the transformation brought by Spain's high-speed expansion: when the Lleida–Tarragona section of the Madrid–Barcelona high-speed line opened in 2006, long-distance services were rerouted to Camp de Tarragona station, approximately 10 kilometres from the city centre, leaving the original terminus to Renfe conventional trains and Rodalies de Catalunya services.

The journey south from Tarragona to Tortosa follows this classic broad-gauge corridor, running on infrastructure that predates the AVE era by well over a century and using a gauge distinct from the standard gauge of Spain's high-speed network. At Tortosa, the line meets a station that itself bridges both worlds, accommodating Renfe Avant high-speed services alongside Rodalies de Catalunya medium-distance trains. The Renfe Class 470 EMU departs a station whose future remains uncertain and arrives at one that quietly anchors the region's everyday connectivity — the old corridor still essential, even as the high-speed age has reshaped the railways around it.
