About this journey

Portbou station sits at the Franco-Spanish border where Iberian gauge (1,668 mm) meets French standard gauge (1,435 mm), making it a mandatory stop for cross-border passengers. The 1,435 mm tracks into the station are powered by the 1,500 V DC French system, allowing SNCF TER trains to reach Portbou from Perpignan. The journey begins on this standard-gauge section, passing through the Balitres tunnel — 1,064 metres of dual-gauge infrastructure where both track widths run side by side, separated by the Spain–France border marker inside the bore — before arriving at Cerbère, the first French stop, with its port and a first glimpse of the Mediterranean.

From Cerbère the line hugs the Côte Vermeille for roughly 20 kilometres, threading through a succession of tunnels and viaducts: the Peyrefitte tunnel at 1,231 metres, the Baillaury viaduct at 150 metres, and shorter structures framing brief coastal panoramas at Banyuls-sur-Mer, Port-Vendres-Ville, and Collioure. This coastal corridor is the heart of the Narbonne–Portbou railway, built by the Compagnie des Chemins de fer du Midi, whose first section between Narbonne and Perpignan opened in 1858 before the line was extended to Portbou in 1878. After Argelès-sur-Mer the line leaves the coast and turns inland across the Roussillon plain, crossing the Tech River on a 245-metre gauntlet-track bridge and stopping at Elne before the final approach.

Perpignan station, which also opened in 1858, is where TER Occitanie regional services, Spanish AVE trains to Barcelona and Madrid, and the Perpignan–Villefranche-de-Conflent line all converge. Part of the station was decorated in the style of Salvador Dalí, who proclaimed it the Centre of the Universe following a vision he experienced there in 1963. The contrast between the intimate coastal switchbacks of the Côte Vermeille and the broad, sun-bleached plain that delivers the train into Perpignan gives this short crossing its distinctive character.
