About this journey

Roma Termini, inaugurated in 1950 after a design competition held in 1947, is one of Italy's principal railway hubs and the departure point for this northward journey along the ferrovia Tirrenica — the Pisa–Rome railway, one of the trunk lines of the Italian network. The line runs along the Tyrrhenian coast, threading through the provinces of Rome, Viterbo, Grosseto and Livorno between Lazio and Tuscany. It is double track and fully electrified at 3,000 V DC throughout. Near Rome, a modernised alignment opened on 25 May 1990 between Rome and Maccarese-Fregene via Aurelia forms part of the route; at Roma San Pietro, a short branch connects to the 300-metre Vatican railway.

The line's southern section, between Rome and Civitavecchia, was opened on 24 April 1859 by the Società Pio Central. The gap northward to Capalbio was completed in 1867, uniting what had been separate railways into the continuous coastal corridor the train follows today. Passenger services are operated by Trenitalia. The journey ends at Pisa Centrale, one of the major railway junctions of Tuscany, where three long-distance lines converge. The station replaced an older terminus — the Leopolda station of 1844 — following a development plan approved on 23 March 1871, and has been equipped with a computerised traffic-control centre since December 2008.
