Scuol-Tarasp to Filisur Cab Ride
Watch on YouTubeAbout this journey
Scuol-Tarasp station sits at the eastern end of the Engadine line, the lower reach of a route whose construction proved one of the most demanding in the Rhaetian Railway's history. Planning was commissioned on 27 July 1903, work on the full line began in spring 1909, and the line opened on 28/29 June 1913 — more than a year late, after engineers encountered unusual rock pressures and severe water ingress in the tunnels between Guarda and Scuol. The 1907 project specification called for a 49.5-kilometre route with 17 tunnels and 55 major bridges, and the line was notable for being the first on the RhB network to operate electrically from its opening, at 11 kV 16⅔ Hz AC.
Westward from Scuol, the metre-gauge line passes through Sagliains, a station opened in November 1999 on spoil excavated from the Vereina Tunnel and serving today as the loading point for the car-shuttle service. Shortly after Susch, a 277-metre connecting tunnel branches off toward the Vereina Tunnel, the link that since 1999 has offered a faster path to Landquart than the Albula line. The route continues through Zernez and across the 113-metre Inn viaduct near Cinuos-chel-Brail, then westward through Bever and onto the Albula line toward Filisur, where the journey ends at the junction with the Davos Platz–Filisur line — a station approached, from the Albula direction, across both the Schmittentobel Viaduct and the Landwasser Viaduct.
