Selzthal to Graz Cab Ride
Watch on YouTubeAbout this journey
Selzthal station sits at one of the most compressed railway junctions in the Austrian Alps, where the Enns Valley Railway and the Rudolf Railway converge before the Pyhrn line's southern terminus. It is from this node that the cab ride departs southward toward Graz, running over electrified track carrying 15 kV at 16.7 Hz AC — the same standard shared across Germany, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein. The Pyhrn railway line, which stretches 104.2 kilometres northward to Linz, meets the Bosruck tunnel near Selzthal, a bore of 4,767 metres driven beneath the Bosruck mountain at the Pyhrn Pass — one piece of the engineering fabric that defines this part of the ÖBB network.
The route south carries the cab ride toward Graz Hauptbahnhof, a station first opened in 1847, rebuilt on a larger scale between 1871 and 1876, and reconstructed after wartime destruction to reopen in 1956. Since 2010 it has been expanded under a programme linked to the forthcoming Koralm Railway, which will eventually provide Graz with a direct connection to Italy via Klagenfurt. The corridor also serves InterCity trains running between Linz and Graz Hauptbahnhof, placing this regional cab ride within a broader long-distance network. The journey moves from a tight alpine junction through the Styrian landscape to a station described as the most frequented in Austria outside Vienna.
