About this journey

Ställdalen station sits near the junction where the Bergslagsbanan splits — one section continuing south-east toward Frövi, the other heading west and north toward Kil, through a corridor that carries very little passenger traffic. Construction of the Bergslagsbanan began in 1855, and the line opened in 1879, originally built to serve the iron and mining industries of the Bergslagen region. That freight heritage persists: the route today carries frequent freight trains moving south toward Gothenburg, into Värmland, and west into Norway.

The section between Nykroppa and Kil is rarely used for passenger services, and Tågab operates only one train per day in each direction on most days across this stretch, making a cab-ride recording here an uncommon document. The Ställdalen–Kil section was upgraded to ATC — Automatic Train Control — in 2017, a change that allowed international freight trains to use it as a through route. At Kil, the Bergslagsbanan meets three other lines: the Norway/Vänern Line, the Fryksdal Line, and the Värmland Line, making the station a meaningful junction in western Sweden's rail network. The journey moves from a lightly served, freight-dominated interior corridor to one of the more connected interchange points in the region.
