About this journey

The journey begins at Strömstad, on the Swedish west coast, and follows the Bohusbanan south toward Gothenburg. The line runs through the Bohuslän region, connecting a series of communities along the coast before reaching the urban approaches of Sweden's second city.

Gothenburg Central station, where the ride ends, was built between 1856 and 1858, with the first building designed by architect Adolf Wilhelm Edelsvärd on land previously occupied by a prison. During the 19th and early 20th century, approximately one million Swedish emigrants passed through the station on their way to the harbour and onward to America. Today the station serves 27 million passengers per year, making it the second-largest railway station in Sweden. A new underground station, Centralen, is under construction adjacent to the existing building as part of the West Link tunnel, expected to open in 2026. The X52-3 Bombardier Regina that works this service operates under a regional public transport authority, which holds full responsibility for the route. Swedish railways run on the left, a practice that continued after road traffic switched sides in 1967 because converting the rail network was considered too costly. The roughly two-hour journey moves from a quiet coastal town through the Bohuslän landscape to one of Scandinavia's most historically significant terminal stations.
