Toulouse to Mazamet Cab Ride
Watch on YouTubeAbout this journey
The journey departs from Toulouse-Matabiau station, the main railway station of Toulouse and the hub of a six-branch star network carrying both TER regional services and national TGV and Corail trains. The current passenger building, designed by architect Marius Toudoire — who also designed Bordeaux station — was constructed between 1903 and 1905, replacing an earlier, smaller structure. Its facade carries 26 coats of arms representing the 26 destinations once served by the Compagnie du Midi, the network founded by Émile Pereire and his brother Jacob in 1853.
From Toulouse, the service runs as a TER Occitanie train operated by SNCF, heading northeast toward Castres and ultimately Mazamet. Castres station introduces one of the more operationally distinctive moments of the journey: it functions as a drive-in, reverse-out terminus, requiring the train to halt and change direction before the final stage continues toward Mazamet. This reversal, routine for the crew, gives the cab-ride perspective an unusually clear sense of the station's layout. The run concludes at Mazamet, having moved from a large regional hub through an intermediate terminus and into a smaller town at the end of the branch — a journey that traces the thinning of the rail network as it reaches into the Tarn département.
