Verona Porta Nuova station, opened in 1852 by the Austrian Empire's Südbahn, sits at a major cross-junction where the north–south Brenner Railway meets the east–west Milan–Venice line — a position the European Union has since designated part of the Berlin–Palermo Trans-European Network axis. Construction of the Brenner Railway had begun in 1853, and by 1867 the full line connected Verona to Innsbruck over the Brenner Pass at 1,371 metres, forming one of Austria's first trans-alpine heavy railways. Electrification along the corridor reached completion in 1941, and today the same tracks carry EuroCity services linking the Italian and Austrian rail networks.

Northward from Verona, the route follows the Brenner Railway through the Adige valley into South Tyrol. Bolzano/Bozen station, reached after the line's passage through Trentino, was first opened on 16 May 1859 upon completion of the Trento–Bolzano section. The railway's ownership south of the former border passed to Italy after Austria's defeat in the Austro-Prussian War of 1866. The journey ends at Salorno, where the Adige valley narrows at the Chiusa di Salorno — a bottleneck that has marked the southern boundary of the German-speaking South Tyrolean Unterland since around 1600, making the station a quiet but precise geographic threshold between two linguistic worlds.
