About this journey

Villach Hauptbahnhof is one of Austria's busiest rail junctions, its twelve tracks hosting Railjet, EuroCity, and EuroNight services to Munich, Ljubljana, Zagreb, and Venice. From here, the S4 service departs westward, leaving the main-line network behind and joining the Gailtal Railway toward Hermagor.

The Gailtal Railway has its origins in 1894, and an extension built in 1915 served military logistics on the Italian Front during the First World War. The Carinthia S-Bahn network, of which this S4 forms part, launched on 12 December 2010, and the Villach–Hermagor S4 service itself began on 11 December 2016 on an hourly weekday schedule. As the line pushes west, the landscape settles into the lower Gail valley, beneath the northern flanks of the Carnic Alps, with the Italian border drawing steadily closer.

Hermagor is the permanent western terminus of the line; when the S4 was introduced, the railway beyond Hermagor closed, leaving these tracks as the end of rail service in the valley. The town draws considerable tourism, particularly for the Nassfeld ski area. The journey from a major international junction to a quiet Alpine terminus captures the contrast at the heart of this route.
