About this journey

Vohwinkel station, whose present building was designed by Alexander Rüdell for the Prussian state railways at the beginning of the 20th century, stands on a site with a much longer history: the original station here dates to 1841, when the Düsseldorf-Elberfeld Railway Company first established a stop in the area. The Prince William Railway extended its tracks to Vohwinkel in 1848, creating the junction that still defines the station's triangular layout. Both the western and eastern ends of this journey connect to Wuppertal's Schwebebahn suspension railway — Vohwinkel station is a short walk from the Bruch and Vohwinkel Schwebebahn stops at one end of the route.

The line runs eastward through the Wupper valley toward Wuppertal-Oberbarmen, a station that opened on 9 October 1847 under the name Barmen-Rittershausen, built by the Bergisch-Märkische Railway Company. At Oberbarmen, the Schwebebahn reaches its eastern terminus, tying the mainline railway back into the city's suspended monorail network. The GTW Generation 15 covers this urban corridor through a landscape shaped by the deep, narrow valleys characteristic of the Bergisches Land, where both the railway and the suspension railway trace the course of the Wupper river from Wuppertal's western fringe to its eastern quarters.
