About this journey

Banská Bystrica station, which opened on 3 September 1873 as part of the Zvolen–Banská Bystrica section of what would become the Vrútky–Zvolen railway, sits in the broad Hron River valley encircled by the Low Tatras, Veľká Fatra, and Kremnica Mountains. The arrival of rail here in 1873 accelerated the city's industrial and urban growth, and the station became a junction in its own right on 19 December 1940, when the Banská Bystrica–Dolná Štubňa section finally completed the through route northward. Today it is the meeting point of Line 170 toward Vrútky and Line 172 toward Červená Skala, with train services operated by Železničná spoločnosť Slovensko (ZSSK) on infrastructure owned by Železnice Slovenskej republiky (ŽSR).

From Banská Bystrica the ZSSK 757 locomotive, built by ČKD Praha, works north along Line 170 through the mountains of central Slovakia toward Vrútky. That terminus sits near Žilina, a city positioned at the confluence of the Váh, Kysuca, and Rajčanka rivers beneath the Malá Fatra range — a setting that made Žilina a significant railway junction from the later nineteenth century onward. The journey thus moves between two distinct Slovak geographies: the enclosed Hron valley basin at its start and the broad river confluence of the Váh corridor at its close.
