Žilina station sits at one of Slovakia's most significant rail junctions, where Line 120 to Bratislava and Line 180 toward Košice converge to form the country's main east–west corridor. The station itself has a long history: it opened on 8 January 1871 with the inauguration of the Český Těšín–Žilina section of the Košice–Bohumín Railway, and the broader corridor it connects to is older still. A horse-drawn predecessor on the Bratislava side first operated as early as 24 September 1840, when its initial section reached Svätý Jur. Animal traction was eventually discontinued on 15 October 1872, and steam operation resumed on 1 May 1873 under the Považie railway company.

The route south from Žilina follows Line 120, a double-tracked line electrified at 25 kV, 50 Hz, rebuilt in stages to modern standards — works that included raising platforms, constructing a subway under the tracks, and renewing electrical wiring across four tracks at stations along the way. Both Line 120 and Line 180 form part of Pan-European Corridor Va, the freight and passenger axis linking Venice to Kyiv via Bratislava, Žilina, Košice, and Uzhhorod, placing this journey on one of the continent's longer-range rail alignments. The ZSSK 350 "Gorilla" Škoda arrives at Bratislava as the southern anchor of that corridor.
