About this journey

Basel SBB station stands as one of Switzerland's great railway hubs, its main concourse inaugurated on 24 June 1907 to designs by Emil Faesch and Emmanuel La Roche. The first railway reached Basel in 1844, and today about 1,000 trains depart the station daily. To accommodate Swiss, German, and French operations under one roof, the tracks near Basel SBB are equipped with three train-protection systems — ETCS Level 1 LS, PZB 90, and EuroSIGNUM/EuroZUB — while the catenary on the French-side platforms can switch between Swiss 15 kV 16.7 Hz AC and French 25 kV 50 Hz AC. Few stations carry so much cross-border infrastructure in so compact a space.

At the far end of the route, Lucerne station has its own layered history. The line from Olten was electrified in 1922, and in late 2012 a new tunnel opened between Kriens Mattenhof and the station approaches, replacing a surface alignment and adding double track. The current concourse was designed by Santiago Calatrava and opened on 5 February 1991. With fourteen tracks across seven island platforms and a direct connection to lake steamers on Lake Lucerne, the destination offers a striking contrast to the landlocked, border-crossing complexity where this journey begins.
