Bourg-Saint-Maurice to Aix-les-Bains Cab Ride
Watch on YouTubeAbout this journey
Bourg-Saint-Maurice station sits at the foot of the French Alps, where the Tarentaise Valley ends and rail access to the Paradiski ski area begins. In winter the station draws direct services from Lille and Amsterdam, underlining its role as one of the Alps' principal rail gateways; in June the same platforms serve the quieter rhythms of the TER network westward toward the Savoie lowlands.
The line descends from that Alpine threshold through the Tarentaise and its foothills before reaching the northeastern shore of the Lac du Bourget, where the track runs close to the water for the final approach into Aix-les-Bains. That lakeside passage is among the more striking stretches of the journey, the railway threading between the lake to the west and the Massif des Bauges to the east. Aix-les-Bains station sits at around 320 metres altitude and connects onward to Chambéry, 9 km to the south by rail, as well as to Annecy and Culoz — a multi-directional junction that was already part of Savoie's rail network when the region was administered by its historic Dukes. The journey moves, in little under two hours, from a high Alpine ski hub to a spa town shaped by an earlier age of railway travel.
