About this journey

Dugo Selo station sits around 20 km east of Zagreb, where lines toward Koprivnica and Novska converge at a major junction forming part of Pan-European Corridors Vb and X. From here the route heads west toward the capital before continuing onto the M101 railway, a 26.709-kilometre line linking Zagreb Glavni kolodvor station to the Slovene railway network west of Savski Marof.

The M101 was opened in 1862 in the former Kingdom of Croatia under Habsburg rule, as part of a line stretching from Zidani Most to Sisak. Its second track was commissioned in 1944, and for decades the line carried the Orient Express, serving that service from 1919 to 1977. The route follows the Sava Valley throughout, and the line is electrified and double-tracked, handling suburban, regional, and international passenger services alongside freight as part of Pan-European Corridor X. Between 2021 and 2022 a 17.8 km section approaching Savski Marof was reconstructed, including rehabilitation of the bridges over the Krapina, Lužnica, and Vrabeščak rivers, with the rebuilt alignment rated for up to 120 km/h. Beyond that main line, the journey reaches Harmica over the L102 railway, a largely unused branch of which only a short section to this border village remains in service — a quiet contrast to the busy international corridor that precedes it.
