Genova Piazza Principe station stands as one of Genova's principal rail gateways, its permanent building inaugurated in 1860 to designs by architect Alessandro Mazzucchetti, who had begun construction there in 1853. The line linking Genova to Turin — the Ferrovia Asti-Genova, also known as the Ferrovia Torino-Genova — traces a corridor through Liguria and Piedmont, calling at Alessandria and Asti before reaching the Po plain. The station handles approximately 66,000 passengers per day, served by Intercity, regional, and international EuroCity services running under Italy's conventional 3 kV DC electrification.

The traction for this journey is provided by an FS class E.402, a locomotive built for the Italian state railway's long-distance fleet. Torino Porta Nuova, where the line terminates, is a buffer-stop station with trains arriving perpendicularly to its facade on Corso Vittorio Emanuele II. Construction there began in 1861, again under the direction of Alessandro Mazzucchetti — the same architect responsible for the departure station — connecting both endpoints of this journey within a single 19th-century vision of the Turin–Genova railway. Today Torino Porta Nuova ranks as Italy's third busiest station, recording around 192,000 journeys per day and approximately 350 train movements daily, a striking contrast to the harbour-city terminus where this cab ride begins.
