About this journey

The journey departs from Graz Hauptbahnhof, a station that has served as a major node on the Southern Railway, linking Graz to Vienna in the north and Slovenia in the south. The original station dated to 1876, but was totally destroyed in allied bombing raids in 1945; the current building was completed in 1956 and its main ticket hall, built in the characteristic style of that decade, is now a listed building. From 2010, the station underwent extensive adaptation as an international transport hub, with all platforms rebuilt and lengthened. The same corridor is served by EuroCity trains running to Zagreb via Maribor.

The line continues south through Styria and across the Austrian-Slovenian border toward Maribor, following route 105 01 on the Zidani Most–Šentilj line. The destination, Maribor, is the second largest city in Slovenia, and its railway station is one of the oldest on the route, first erected in 1844. The station was upgraded in 2021, so the journey moves between a mid-twentieth-century rebuilt terminus in Austria and a recently modernised historic station in Slovenia — a span of railway history contained within a single cross-border run.
