About this journey

The journey begins at Innsbruck Hauptbahnhof, a station that dates to 1853 and today serves as the central hub of IVB, Innsbruck's bus and tram operator. From the station forecourt — a public transport interchange also serving the narrow-gauge Stubai Valley Railway — the Bombardier Flexity tram of the Igler Bahn departs southward, leaving the Inn valley floor behind.

Innsbruck sits enclosed between the Karwendel Alps to the north, where the Hafelekarspitze reaches 2,334 metres, and the southern ridge anchored by Patscherkofel at 2,246 metres. Both massifs frame the cab's view as the line climbs toward Igls, the small borough at the upper end of the route. Igls, with a population of 2,631, is home to ski terrain that served as a venue during Innsbruck's two Winter Olympics, held in 1964 and again in 1976. Patscherkofel itself was among the Olympic competition mountains. The contrast across the 46-minute ride is marked: the tram threads through an urban Tyrolean capital before ascending into a quieter Alpine suburb, where the mountain scenery that defined those mid-twentieth-century Games still dominates the skyline.
