About this journey

Landquart station sits at the 0 km point of the Rhaetian Railway's core network and has served as the company's operational base and main workshop since the railway's earliest days. It was here that Willem Jan Holsboer proposed a line toward Davos in 1888, the ground-breaking ceremony taking place on 29 June 1888, and Landquart has anchored the RhB ever since.

From Landquart the journey follows lines 910 and 960 southeast through the canton of Graubünden aboard the ABe 4/16 Capricorn. The later section of the route, the Engadine line between Bever and Scuol-Tarasp, was opened on 28/29 June 1913 and was the first RhB line to be electrified from the outset, operating at 11 kV 16⅔ Hz AC. The 1907 project for that line called for a 49.5 km route requiring 17 tunnels and 55 major bridges, and the finished railway reflects that engineering ambition — particularly in the closing stretch between Guarda and Scuol-Tarasp, where the line passes through the Magnacun Tunnel at 1,909 m and the Tasna Tunnel at 2,350 m. The journey ends at Scuol-Tarasp station, a terminus that also receives freight: oil, mail, cement, and other goods arrive by rail from Landquart, many trains now routing through the Vereina Tunnel that has been open since 1999.
