About this journey

The journey begins at Ljubljana railway station, the principal hub for both domestic and international rail services in Slovenia. The station building, renovated in 1980 by architect Marko Mušič, was first completed on 18 April 1848, a year before the Austrian Southern Railway linking Vienna and Trieste extended its tracks here. That historic corridor is the one the SŽ Stadler Class 510 follows out of the capital, running southwest on the Ljubljana–Sežana line — the same alignment that carries EuroCity services and regional trains toward the Italian border.

Divača, where this journey ends, has served that corridor since 1857, and its position close to the Italian border has long made it a point of divergence as much as a destination. At Divača, the Divača–Koper Railway departs southward across approximately 50 kilometres to the Adriatic coastal town of Koper — a branch whose own geometry is being transformed by a new tunnel alignment that will shorten the route from 44 km to 27 km, with opening planned for 2026. The cab ride thus arrives at a station in transition: an 1857 junction evolving into a modern freight and passenger crossroads, while Ljubljana itself is mid-way through a station expansion costing around 167 million euros, also due for completion in 2026.
