Ljubljana railway station, completed on 18 April 1848, stands at one of the older railway sites in the region, and it is here that the 64.5 km line northwest to Jesenice begins. That line opened on 14 December 1870, built by the Imperial and Royal Crown Prince Rudolf railway company under an 1869 concession. Following a financial crisis, the company was nationalised in 1884 and the line passed to the Imperial Royal Austrian State Railways. The route is single-track and electrified at 3 kV DC, with only a short double-track stretch near Ljubljana Šiška.

The journey is operated by Slovenian Railways (SŽ) using a Stadler FLIRT unit, crossing terrain that gradually rises toward the Julian Alps foothills before arriving at Jesenice. That station became a significant junction in 1906, when the Bohinj Railway toward Trieste and the Karawanks Railway — passing through the Karawanks Tunnel to Villach Hauptbahnhof across the Austrian border — both converged there. The cross-border section onward to Tarvisio closed in 1967 on the Italian side and in 1969 on the Slovenian side, leaving this Ljubljana–Jesenice corridor as the active portion of the original route. The terminus building itself is architecturally distinctive: a modernist structure faced in white marble with hexagonal windows, set against the Karawanks to the north and the Mežakla plateau to the south.
