About this journey

Ljubljana railway station, whose original building was completed on 18 April 1848, is currently undergoing a major renovation costing around 167 million euros, with completion planned for 2026. From here, the route heads southeast toward Trebnje before joining the Sevnica–Trebnje Railway for the final stretch into Sevnica.

That connecting line has an industrial origin: the Trebnje–Krmelj section was built in 1908 to serve a coal mine at Krmelj, and the extension to Sevnica followed between 1936 and 1938. The mine closed in 1962, its spur removed in 1996, yet the 31.2-kilometre, single-tracked, non-electrified line found renewed purpose decades later. After floods in August 2023 severely damaged the main Ljubljana–Zidani Most line, this route became the only rail link between Ljubljana and Maribor, a role for which its higher flood resistance proved decisive.

The line crosses the Sava River on a 158-metre bridge at Sevnica, built in 1938, then threads the Mirna Valley, crossing both the Mirna and Bistrica rivers before reaching Trebnje. The journey ends at Sevnica station, where a modest branch born from a long-closed colliery stands as one of Slovenia's more quietly essential railway connections.
