About this journey

The journey begins at the Railway Museum in Ljubljana's Šiška district — historically a separate village before becoming part of the city — and follows the Ljubljana Šiška–Kamnik Graben line northward out of the Slovenian capital. Ljubljana itself sits at an elevation of 295 metres in the Ljubljana Basin, positioned between the Alps and the Karst, a geography that made the city a natural node on trade routes between the northern Adriatic and the Danube region and shaped the logic of early railway construction here. The first train reached Ljubljana in 1849, arriving from Vienna, and by 1857 the network had extended south to Trieste.

The main Ljubljana railway station, visible at the start of the wider filming run but not covered in this segment, has been undergoing significant change since autumn 2024: a reconstruction costing around 167 million euros, co-financed with European funds and scheduled for completion in 2026, is bringing covered platforms, rearranged tracks, and an elongated underpass to a building that was last substantially renovated in 1980. The line filmed here departs from the museum rather than the main terminus, threading through the northwestern quarters of the city before continuing toward Kamnik Graben — a route that moves from the dense railway infrastructure of the capital into the quieter terrain beyond.
