About this journey

The journey begins at Metlika station, a border-zone town in the Bela krajina region of southeastern Slovenia, and follows the line designated Državna meja – Metlika – Ljubljana northwestward toward the Slovenian capital. The route passes through Lower Carniola, touching settlements such as Birčna Vas in the Municipality of Novo Mesto before the landscape gradually transitions toward the broader Ljubljana Basin.

Ljubljana's terminus has a long history: the station building was completed on 18 April 1848, a year before the Austrian Southern Railway connection arrived in the city. Renovated in 1980 by architect Marko Mušič, the station today functions as Slovenia's main rail hub, handling domestic services alongside international trains including the EuroCity Emona linking Vienna and Ljubljana. The platform also carries a quieter piece of literary history — a monument by sculptor Jakov Brdar, erected on Bloomsday 2003, marks the night James Joyce spent here in October 1904 after mistaking Ljubljana for Trieste. The cab ride thus moves from a quiet border station through the rolling terrain of Lower Carniola to a terminus layered with architectural and cultural memory.
