About this journey

Pula station sits at the southern tip of the Istrian peninsula, the departure point for a cross-border corridor that connects Croatia's Adriatic coast with the Slovenian rail network at Divača. The line was built in 1876 to serve Pula as Austria-Hungary's main naval base, a role the city had held since 1859, and the route still follows that original imperial alignment north through Istria before crossing into Slovenia.

The railway is operated under the designations R101 and the historic Istrian line — Istrska železnica — and the traction throughout is provided by a SŽ 610 Stadler Flirt EMU. Divača station itself is one of the older nodes on this network, opened in 1857 as part of the Südliche Staatsbahn's southward push toward Trieste. Arriving there from Pula means completing a journey that moves from a peninsula shaped by Roman and Habsburg history into the Slovenian karst, ending at a junction that predates the Istrian branch by nearly two decades.
