About this journey

Dobova station sits on the Slovenian–Croatian border, where the 114.7-kilometre Dobova–Ljubljana Railway begins its run northwestward through the Sava Valley. At this frontier, the electrification system changes: trains crossing from Croatia arrive under 25 kV AC, while the Slovenian line operates on 3 kV DC — a technical boundary that reflects Dobova's long-standing role as a gateway between the two rail networks. Here the line also connects to the Croatian M101 route extending toward Zagreb.

The Sava Valley corridor the line follows forms an integral part of Pan-European Corridor X, linking Salzburg through Ljubljana and Zagreb toward Skopje and Thessaloniki. That international significance has deep roots: the Orient Express ran over this same route from 1919 to 1977, and the double-tracked, fully electrified line still carries a substantial share of southeast European rail traffic. The journey ends at Zidani Most station, positioned near the confluence of the Sava and Savinja Rivers. More than a geographical landmark, Zidani Most is the primary interchange point at which most non-direct services connecting eastern Slovenia with Ljubljana converge — a quiet but pivotal node that contrasts with the open valley corridor traversed to reach it.
