Ljubljana railway station, completed on 18 April 1848, is the departure point for the Dobova–Ljubljana Railway, a 114.7-kilometre double-tracked line that runs the full length of the Sava Valley to the Slovenian–Croatian border. Operated by Slovenske železnice Infrastruktura d.o.o., the line forms part of Pan-European Corridor X, which connects Salzburg through Ljubljana and Zagreb towards Skopje and Thessaloniki — a role that reflects the route's long importance to international rail traffic.

That international character has deep roots: the Orient Express used this corridor from 1919 to 1977, linking western Europe with the Balkans through the same Sava Valley the cab ride traverses. The line is electrified at 3 kV DC throughout its Slovenian extent. At Dobova station, an international railway border crossing, the voltage shifts to 25 kV AC as the network hands over to Croatia's M101 line towards Zagreb. The ÖBB Rh 1216 Taurus — a multi-system locomotive — is well suited to that transition, though in this January 2024 journey the crossing point itself marks the end of the footage. The ride moves from Ljubljana's urban station through the Sava Valley to that quiet electrification frontier, tracing in under two hours a corridor that once carried one of the world's most celebrated named trains.
