About this journey

Trieste Centrale station, where this journey begins, opened on 27 July 1857 under the Austrian state railway company k.k. Südliche Staatsbahn, completing the Vienna–Trieste connection via the Semmering pass. Emperor Franz Joseph I attended that inauguration in person, reflecting Trieste's strategic weight within the Habsburg Empire. The original passenger building, designed by engineer Carl Ritter von Ghega, was replaced by the present Neo-Renaissance structure designed by Wilhelm von Flattich, inaugurated on 19 June 1878 and distinguished by its monumental Royal Hall and glass train hall. The present-day rail network of Trieste traces its foundations largely to lines laid by the former Austrian and Austro-Hungarian empires, and following the 1919 Treaty of Saint-Germain-en-Laye the stations passed to Italian state railway management.

The route runs west along the northern Adriatic coast before crossing the Veneto plain toward Venice. The journey ends at Venezia Mestre station, situated at the 257.907 km mark of the Milan–Venice line and classified by RFI as a gold category station. Tracks 1 and 2 at Mestre are specifically assigned to trains arriving from the Trieste line, a detail that underlines the long-standing operational connection between these two cities at either end of the northern Adriatic corridor.
