About this journey

Venezia Mestre station sits at the heart of north-east Italy's rail network, where five main lines converge — among them the Venice–Trieste line that carries this journey eastward. Classified by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana as a gold category station, Mestre handles approximately 500 trains and 85,000 passengers each day, with tracks 1 and 2 dedicated to departures toward Trieste.

The railway this service follows has deep Habsburg roots. Trieste Centrale opened on 27 July 1857, when the Austrian state railway company k.k. Südliche Staatsbahn completed the link as part of the Vienna–Trieste railway via the Semmering pass — Emperor Franz Joseph I was present at the ceremony. The original station building, designed by engineer Carl Ritter von Ghega, stood on reclaimed land where the present terminus still stands. After the Treaty of Saint-Germain-en-Laye in 1919, the line passed to Italian FS management and the station was renamed Trieste Centrale. A renovation completed in 2007 under the Centostazioni project restored the building, including full access to the Royal Hall. Today the terminus has nine tracks and five platforms, set adjacent to the old free port of a city whose entire rail network remains shaped by the former Austrian and Austro-Hungarian empires — a legacy that gives this coastal journey an unmistakably cross-border character.
