About this journey

Roma Termini is one of Italy's principal railway hubs, and from its platforms the line runs east and south into the Apennine interior, eventually reaching the Marsica region of Abruzzo. The service is worked by an FS class E.464 locomotive, the workhorse of Trenitalia's regional network across the country.

The journey ends at Avezzano station, which opened in 1888 and stands on both the Rome–Sulmona–Pescara railway and the Avezzano–Roccasecca railway. The original station buildings were destroyed in the 1915 earthquake that devastated the surrounding area, and the replacement building was restored only after World War II. On the station forecourt, a Monte Velino steam locomotive — one of ten that Alessandro Torlonia once used to haul beet from Fucino to a local sugarbeet factory — stands as a monument and is regarded as a symbol of post-earthquake Avezzano. The ninety-six-minute run from Roma thus moves between a major national terminus and a station that carries a particular weight of history, rebuilt from near-total destruction into a functioning junction for the Abruzzo interior.
