Italy
Naples to Rome Cab Ride
Watch on YouTubeAbout this journey
The journey begins at Napoli Centrale, a terminal station with 23 tracks serving everything from regional trains to high-speed Frecciarossa services. Departing the Campanian capital, the route follows the Ferrovia Roma–Formia–Napoli corridor — the coastal Direttissima opened in 1927, the second of the historic lines linking Naples and Rome. Earlier still, the southernmost stretch of the Rome–Cassino–Naples line through Caserta and Cancello had been opened on 20 December 1843 by the Royal Neapolitan Railway Company, making this one of the oldest rail corridors in Italy. The full Rome–Cassino–Naples route was completed in 1863 by the Società per le strade ferrate romane, becoming the first of three lines to connect the two capitals.
The filmed service runs as a regional train, calling at intermediate stations along the Tyrrhenian coastal corridor through Formia and Minturno before crossing into Lazio. The line is electrified at 3 kV DC, the standard for Italy's classic network. Alongside this corridor, the Rome–Naples high-speed railway — opened on 19 December 2005 — follows broadly the same geography, layering two centuries of infrastructure into a single travel axis. The journey ends at Roma Termini, whose current building was inaugurated in 1950 following a design competition held in 1947, a monumental contrast to the modest regional stations passed along the way.
