About this journey

The journey begins at Varaždin station, a regional interchange where line R201 meets the L201 and R202 lines. The city behind the station is known for its baroque architecture and served as Croatia's capital until an April 1776 fire forced the government back to Zagreb. From here the train heads southwest along the R201 — a 100.6-kilometre single-tracked, partially electrified line opened in 1886 in the former Kingdom of Croatia-Slavonia to connect Zaprešić with Čakovec.

The Zabok–Varaždin section passes through the Hrvatsko Zagorje region, threading across four counties and linking Međimurje and Zagorje with Zagreb. A HŽPP Class 7121 diesel multiple unit works this segment, as completion of the 2018–2021 modernisation of the Zaprešić–Zabok section shifted electric services westward, leaving DMU trains to cover the remainder of the corridor. That modernisation brought the western portion up to a design speed of up to 120 km/h and rerouted 6 km of track, reducing passenger running times by 30 to 50 percent — changes not yet extended to the filmed section.

The line terminates this journey at Zabok station, the central railway hub of Krapina-Zagorje County, where R201 meets lines toward Krapina and the Slovenian border (R106) and toward Gornja Stubica (L202). The rebuilt station reflects the modernisation works, featuring 55-cm high platforms and audio-visual passenger information systems installed during reconstruction.
