About this journey

Zagreb Glavni Kolodvor, the country's principal passenger railway station, stands as the starting point of this journey toward Novska. Designed by Hungarian architect Ferenc Pfaff and opened on 18 August 1892 — a date chosen to coincide with Emperor Franz Joseph I's birthday — the station's Neoclassical building stretches 186.5 m along its frontage. Its construction had been authorised by the Croatian-Hungarian Parliament on 15 January 1890, driven by rapid growth in railway traffic following the opening of the continuous line between Budapest and Rijeka in 1873. Subsequent expansions in 1922 and 1936 added tracks, covered platforms, and underground passenger passages, and the station is today a protected cultural monument of Croatia.

The route heads southeast from Zagreb, running for just over two hours aboard an HŽPP 6122 KONČAR unit. At the far end of the journey, Novska station serves as a significant junction point, where lines from Zagreb via Dugo Selo, the route toward Vinkovci and Serbia, and the line from Sisak all converge across 18 tracks in total. The contrast between the grand, historically layered terminus at Zagreb and the functional, multi-directional junction at Novska reflects two distinct but complementary roles within Croatia's rail network.
