Aarau to Schöftland Cab Ride
Watch on YouTubeAbout this journey
The journey begins at Aarau WSB station, a metre-gauge facility with three passenger tracks integrated directly into the broader Aarau railway complex. From here, the line passes through a 260-metre tunnel — constructed in 1967 to relocate the original city-centre street running — before emerging into the Suhrental, the valley of the Suhr river that gives this branch its name. The Suhrental line was conceived from the outset as a narrow-gauge electric tramway and opened on 19 November 1901, built under licence by Brown, Boveri & Cie. The track is 1,000 mm metre gauge throughout, and the branch's steepest gradient reaches 4.5%.
Heading northeast through the valley, the route retains some of its tramway origins, though the section through Muhen was diverted from the main road in 2004. At Oberentfelden, the line crosses the SBB Lenzburg–Zofingen main line on a level crossing, one of the more distinctive moments of the run. The two branches that now form the network were united as the Wynental- und Suhrentalbahn (WSB) on 24 June 1958, and operation passed to Aargau Verkehr AG (AVA) on 19 June 2018, following a merger with BDWM Transport. The line now runs as Aargau S-Bahn route S14. The journey ends at Schöftland, the eastern terminus of the branch and the site of the line's main workshops.
