About this journey

Bern station, developed progressively between 1858 and 1860, has long served as Switzerland's second largest rail hub, and the route south toward Fribourg carries a history as contested as any in Swiss railway politics. The Lausanne–Fribourg–Bern Railway company was formed in 1858, but its alignment was only settled after a bitter dispute resolved by the Federal Assembly on 19 December 1857, which ruled that a line via Oron — roughly 26 km shorter than the rival route via Murten — better served the national interest. The canton of Fribourg had simultaneously insisted that the line pass through its capital rather than bypass it, a demand that ultimately prevailed.

The most consequential engineering consequence of that political victory was the Grandfey Viaduct, a 352 m structure crossing the Saane/Sarine river on the northern approach to Fribourg. Its construction delayed the opening of the Fribourg–Bern section by two years; Fribourg station finally opened on 20 August 1862 under the Western Swiss Railways. Today the route forms part of the broader Mittellandlinie, and the BLS S1 service continues to run the corridor on a half-hourly frequency. Arriving at Fribourg station, the journey ends in a city whose centre has gradually shifted from the historic Old City toward the station quarter — a quiet testament to what that hard-won alignment made possible.
