Innsbruck to Feldkirch Cab Ride
Watch on YouTubeAbout this journey
Innsbruck Hauptbahnhof sits at the junction of five railway lines, among them the Arlberg Railway heading west and the Brenner Railway striking south toward Italy. A reconstruction begun in 2001 gave the station its current form, which opened officially on 19 May 2004, replacing a structure that had been completely destroyed by Allied bombing in the Second World War.
The westward route follows the Arlberg Railway, which opened in 1883 and established the corridor that this journey traces across Tyrol and into Vorarlberg. That opening transformed Feldkirch from a regional stop into an international transport hub, and the original station building there required repeated extensions from 1884 onward to handle the surge in traffic. Today the route forms part of the Zürich–Vienna Railjet corridor, one of Austria's principal east–west arteries, and ÖBB Nightjet overnight services also use this section on international runs linking Zürich with Budapest, Prague, and Zagreb.
Feldkirch station itself first opened on 1 July 1872, predating the Arlberg Railway by over a decade, as part of the Vorarlberg railway. It remains the only Austrian border station adjacent to the Principality of Liechtenstein and serves as a loading point for motorail services to Vienna, Graz, and Villach. The journey thus moves from Innsbruck's historic Alpine crossroads to a compact frontier station whose modest scale belies its enduring strategic weight.
