About this journey

Margecany station sits on the Slovak rail network as a junction point from which this service heads west and south through the mountain interior toward Banská Bystrica. Train services along the route are operated by Železničná spoločnosť Slovensko (ZSSK), with infrastructure owned by Železnice Slovenskej republiky (ŽSR), and the ZSSK Class 812 unit covers the full journey of just over three and a half hours.

Banská Bystrica's connection to the national rail network dates to 1873, when the line arrived from Zvolen, opening the copper-mining city to broader rail commerce. The city's name reflects that mining heritage directly: the adjective Banská derives from the Slovak word baňa, meaning mine, and by the 16th century the region had become a leading world producer of copper. The city also carries significant wartime history — on 29 August 1944 it served as the headquarters from which the Slovak National Uprising, one of the largest anti-Nazi resistance events in Europe, was launched.

The approach to Banská Bystrica brings the line into a long valley carved by the Hron River, encircled by the Low Tatras, the Veľká Fatra, and the Kremnica Mountains. The station itself sits at 368 metres above sea level, and the surrounding mountain chains close in on the valley as the journey draws to its end.
