About this journey

Osijek station, the principal railway station in Osijek and one of the larger stations in Croatia, sits in the city centre of Slavonia's largest city. From here, the M301 line heads north toward Beli Manastir and on to Budapest, giving this stretch the character of an international corridor rather than a regional branch.

The route crosses the flat Slavonian plains of eastern Croatia, a landscape defined by watercourses running perpendicular to the direction of travel — the same terrain that required numerous bridges and viaducts when the A5 motorway was built along a parallel alignment. That motorway, whose section between Osijek and Beli Manastir opened in December 2022, now crosses the Drava river on a 2,507-metre bridge visible as a marker of recent infrastructure in an otherwise low-lying agricultural landscape. The railway itself is non-electrified and single-tracked for most of its length, and the HŽPP 7121 diesel unit reflects that engineering reality.

Beli Manastir, the northern terminus of this cab ride, sits close to the Hungarian border and serves as the crossing point where the M301 continues onward. The journey moves from Croatia's Slavonian heartland to its edge in under an hour, tracing a quiet but internationally significant line through a region where road and rail each find their own way across the plain.
