About this journey

Štrbské Pleso station sits at the western end of Line 183 — the main line of the Tatra Electric Railway, known by its Slovak initials TEŽ — where it also meets the rack railway climbing from Štrba below. That rack connection, electrified at 1,500 V DC in common with the TEŽ, replaced an earlier steam-worked Riggenbach rack line that dated to 1896 and was dismantled in the 1940s; the rebuilt electric version was planned in 1968 in connection with the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 1970 held at the resort. The TEŽ's own main line through to Štrbské Pleso was completed on 13 August 1912, establishing the route this cab ride covers.

A ZSSK 425.95 (Stadler GWT) works the journey east along Line 183, calling at Starý Smokovec — the mid-route junction where Line 184 to Tatranská Lomnica branches away — before continuing toward the valley. Infrastructure on the line is owned by Železnice Slovenskej republiky (ŽSR), with services operated by Železničná spoločnosť Slovensko (ZSSK). The journey ends at Poprad Tatry station, which first opened on 8 December 1871 as part of the Košice–Bohumín Railway, connecting the High Tatras network with the broader national rail system. The ride moves from a high mountain resort terminus, through the central Tatras junction, down to a mainline interchange that has served the region for well over a century.
